Road Policing Officers were once again out and about in Midlothian as part of Operation Zenith and the ‘Live Fast Die Old’ motorcycle campaign.

Sergeants Roger Park and Iain Blain met with two retired Lothian and Borders officers who have years of experience on a bike.

Seventy-nine-year-old Ian Cameron served 30 years as a police officer – 23 of which were spent in the traffic department.

Ian, seen on the left astride a police Kawasaki motorcycle, also features on the black and white photo (left) taken in Bristo Square, Edinburgh.

He was part of the Special Escort Group, set up for the 1970 Commonwealth Games.

Pictured beside Ian on a Yamaha motorcycle is John Innes.

John, who is now 68-years-old, has also served around 30 years in the police and over 20 years in the traffic department.

The pair are active members of the Lothian and Borders Classic Motorcycle Club.

John still rides his BMW bike regularly, however Ian decided to hang up his helmet last year.

Both men put their enjoyable and at times challenging riding careers down to the advanced tuition they received whilst police officers.

They believe enhanced observations, hazard perception, planning and anticipation are key to safe riding.
