Detective Inspector Graham Grant said: “A man is now gravely ill following this assault which happened in the early hours of New Year’s Day near a busy pub. Officers have been speaking to witnesses and people in the area today but we are still keen to hear from anyone else who may have seen what happened. It is being treated as an isolated incident.
“Officers will be carrying out additional patrols in Leith tonight to give further reassurance and provide people with an opportunity to give any further information. Alternatively call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
