Police are appealing for witnesses following a distraction theft which took place  around 12:15pm yesterday when three male suspects entered a Scotmid store on Gorgie Road.

One of the men immediately approached the front kiosk and asked the shop assistant for an item out of the bakery.

As the staff member served the man, his accomplices stole a three-figure sum of money from a till.

All three suspects then left the shop with staff members unaware of the theft until the following day.

Police are now seeking the assistance of the public in an effort to trace the men.

They are described as white, around 5ft 10ins tall and in their mid forties. Two were wearing a baseball cap with jeans and a light grey hoodie.

Sergeant Stuart Byron of Police Scotland said: “We are pursuing various lines of inquiry, including a full review of local CCTV footage.

“However, I am very keen to trace these men as quickly as possible and I ask anyone who saw them either before or after this theft, to come forward immediately.

“At this stage, we know that the men calmly walked out of the shop and were last seen exiting Scotmid before being lost from view.

“Those with relevant information, no matter how small it may seem, are asked to contact police on 101 or, alternatively the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
