Jill

The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after an Edinburgh man found a pet rat under his kitchen sink.

Scotland’s animal welfare charity was called on Sunday (6 April) after the resident of Bingham Medway discovered the creature in a kitchen cupboard at his third storey flat.

The young white female rat is now in the care of the charity’s Edinburgh and Lothians Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Balerno, where she has been nicknamed Jill.

Inspector Sarah Gregory said, “The man who found Jill has previously owned rats so he knew straight away she was a pet and needed help.

“At this stage we don’t know if Jill has managed to escape from home or been cruelly abandoned and left to fend for herself.

“Either way, we’re very glad she was found as pet rats don’t have the same survival skills as a wild rats and she would have soon perished.

“We’d encourage anyone who recognises her to call our animal helpline on 03000 999 999.

“If no-one comes forward for Jill we’ll find her a loving new home.”
