Hibs goalkeeper and former Scotland international, David Marshall has announced his retirement from professional football.
In a new role, Marshall will become the Club’s Technical Performance Manager, working closely with new Sporting Director Malky Mackay.
He will work on strengthening the Football Operations Department on the performance side, working directly to support the Sporting Director and First Team operation.
The 39-year-old brings to an end an accomplished playing career, which saw him make 670 senior First Team appearances across the last two decades.
He made his debut for Celtic in February 2003 and went on to win two league titles and a Scottish Cup during his time in Glasgow, whilst also featuring in the Champions League and the UEFA Cup.
Marshall’s trophy cabinet also includes the English Championship trophy, which he lifted whilst at Cardiff City under Malky Mackay during the 2012/13 season.
Marshall made 100 appearances in the English Premier League and over 450 in the Championship, featuring for Norwich City, Cardiff City, Hull City, Wigan, Derby County, and QPR – before joining Hibs in 2022.
On the international front, Marshall will go down as cult-hero, earning 47 caps and playing his part in Scotland’s Euro 2020 qualifying campaign.
The Scotland ‘keeper saved crucial penalties against Israel and Serbia in play-off penalty shootouts – booking Scotland’s place at a first major tournament since 1998.
Marshall featured 86 times for Hibs– including 39 as captain – keeping 22 clean sheets during his two seasons at the Club.
Following the expiration of his contract and after several positive conversations with the Club, Marshall has agreed to join the Club’s football department at HTC.
During his playing career, Marshall completed a Master’s degree in Sports Directorship whilst also joining the Board of the Hibernian Community Foundation and is now eager to put that experience to good use.
Upon announcing his retirement, David Marshall said: “Having made the decision to retire from football, I’m delighted to be given the opportunity in this role at the Football Club. I’ve got to know and understand the Club over the last two seasons and I look forward to working closely with Malky Mackay to create an environment which can deliver success both on and off the pitch.
“This new role is a great opportunity for me to work across various different performance departments within the Football Club and to learn from Malky who has years of experience in the game.
“The fans support will be vital to our success and I know, as always, you’ll be there for the team, David Gray and his coaching staff. I am looking forward to getting started for the 2024/25 campaign.”
