Stockbridge Shelter sale

The January Shelter sale on Wednesday raised much needed funds for the charity with some bumper items.

Every year staff and volunteers come up with a range of items for the sale which are donated during the year. This year was no exception – there was a signed first edition of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets as well as a signed first edition of HG Wells The War of the Worlds.

Designer brands such as Armani, Gucci and Ralph Lauren were on the rails for the many shoppers who lined up to capture a bargain.

Director, Alison Watson, said: “For more than two decades now the Shelter Scotland’s January Stockbridge launch event has been marked in the calendars of Edinburgh’s discerning shoppers.

“Scotland is in a housing emergency: there are more than 9,500 children in Scotland with nowhere to call home, more and more people are becoming homeless, while the housing budget has just been slashed.

“Your support keeps us in the fight against homelessness, so ahead of this exciting event I’d like to thank all our customers and donors for their generosity.”

Something for the children

At the City Art Centre on Saturday they are running two craft sessions when you can “find out how to turn your boring recycling into funky creatures. Bring in your old kitchen roll tubes and we will provide the rest. This activity will explore why recycling is important and how it affects our climate. The workshop will let your children’s creativity flow while they turn trash into treasure”.

No need to book just turn up at 2pm.

New bus design

The newest design on Lothian buses is the pygmy hippo. So now you can get on board the bus decorated with one of the best loved animals to Edinburgh Zoo.

https://twitter.com/EdinburghZoo/status/1741798742330634452

Edinburgh Zoo has two pygmy hippos, an adult male, called Otto and an adult female called Gloria. The pair welcomed a calf, Amara, in 2021. Amara moved to ZSL Whipsnade in 2023 as part of the European breeding programme.

And this is a timely reminder that the Zoo’s Winter Village with an ice rink is open until 7 January.
