Police are investigating following an assault in Loanhead which took place around 9.40pm last night.
The victim, who is in his seventies, was approached by two young girls in the High Street, who disclosed they were being harassed by a group of teenagers.
The victim advised the two girls to leave the area and attempted to prevent further incident. However while doing so he was assaulted by one of the male members of the group. This attack took place a short distance away in The Loan.
The victim sustained a facial injury and later received treatment from the Scottish Ambulance Service.
Police are now investigating and are appealing for information.
The male suspect is described as white, aged 15-17 years with light brown hair and is of large build. He was wearing a light coloured jacket.
Inspector John Dryden of Penicuik Police Station said: “This was a violent attack upon a vulnerable individual who was acting as a good Samaritan.
“We are eager to trace the person responsible for this attack, along with the other members of the group.
“Anyone who witnessed the attack, or recognises the description of the suspect, is asked to get in touch with us as soon as possible.”
