Police in Edinburgh are today utilising national resources to promote crime prevention to those enjoying the Festival.

The annual policing operation for the month-long event was launched last week and today officers from across the country will join local resources to inform the public on how to safeguard their belongings.

Throughout the day, a total of 63 officers will be deployed across the city to provide a robust police presence in busy areas, particularly those regularly visited by tourists and locals during the Festival period.

Police Scotland’s specially designed ‘Hold Onto Your Stuff’ leaflets will be distributed within the city centre and officers will be available to provide advice on how to ensure opportunistic criminals cannot target your property.

During the evening, Licensing Officers will be assisted by additional resources to visit a number of pubs and clubs within the city centre, where they will speak to staff and ensure no criminal activity is taking place within.

Inspector Nicola Page from the City Centre Policing Team said: “We are now well into the first week of The Festival and the city is already getting busier, with thousands of visitors arriving to enjoy what the Capital has to offer over the coming month.

“Taking simple steps such as always being aware of your surroundings, never leaving personal possessions unattended and keeping valuables out of sight will help ensure you do not fall victim to theft or acquisitive crime.

“Our ‘Hold Onto Your Stuff’ leaflet provides useful information on protecting your property and this can also be obtained on the Edinburgh Division Facebook page. “Other advice on crime prevention is available at the Police Scotland website – www.scotland.police.uk.”
