Police are appealing for information after an assault and attempted robbery last night on Lauriston Place.

The incident took place around 10pm when a 19 year old woman was walking home from a night out along Forest Road and then onto Laurison Place, making her way to a bus stop near Tollcross.

As she approached the pillars directly opposite the Two Thin Laddies on Laurison Place, the female suspect appeared from behind the pillar, and grabbed the victim by the hair. The victim was forced onto the ground and there was a struggle while the suspect attempted to take her handbag.

The suspect was disturbed by passersby and made off empty handed, getting into a dark blue coloured 5 door saloon car, possibly a BMW. The car appeared to be driven by a man, with another man sitting in the back seat. The car turned left into Brougham Street and was lost to sight.

The suspect is described 20 to 30 years old, 4ft 11in to 5ft 4in tall, light blonde or brown tied up hair and wearing a black hoodie or jacket, blue jeans and dark trainers.

Detective Inspector Carol Craig said: “This was a shocking assault on the young victim, and she was understandably left shaken. We know that a number of people heard the victim’s screams, and may have witnessed this assault. If anyone was in the area at the time, or observed a dark blue-coloured five door saloon car in the Tollcross area round 10pm, we would urge them to contact Police Scotland on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
