2011_10 Police signs 11

Police are appealing for information after a Spanish man was assaulted in the Old Town in the early hours of Sunday morning (24th August.)

Around 2am on Sunday, the 27-year-old victim and friend were walking along the Cowgate, in the direction of Victoria Street. The victim was then approached from behind by the suspect and punched to the head.

The suspect was pursued by police in the direction of Candlemaker Row. He knocking over two females as he ran away, but was then lost to sight.

He is described as white, around 30 years old, 6ft tall, muscular build, short dark hair, and wearing a beige short-sleeved, tight t-shirt and black trousers.

Police are now appealing for anyone who may have witnessed this assault, or who has information that can help with the investigation, to contact police on 101.

Detective Sergeant Lynsey Thomson said: “This was a completely unprovoked assault in which the victim was punched without notice by a suspect who was unknown to him. The victim was taken to ERI where he was treated for a broken jaw. Enquiries are continuing to trace the perpetrator and anyone who witnessed this assault should contact police immediately.”
