Hibs’ Head Coach Alan Stubbs is hoping to sign 28-year-old defender Liam Fontaine, who was released by Bristol City in the summer after 279 appearances for the club.

The former Fulham defender who had a spell in Scotland with Kilmarnock could replace Michael Nelson who is understood to be the subject of interest from another club.

Fontaine could be in the Hibs squad to face Dumbarton in the League Cup tonight.

Nelson who won a League Cup medal with Kilmarnock signed for Hibs from Bradford City at the start of last season following the heavy defeat by Malmo. After a bright start, he suffered a facial injury in a game against Celtic and missed several games before returning to the side which suffered relegation from the Scottish Premiership.
