Sad news – World Heritage Day Event – Certificate of Work readiness – Support in Mind Scotland – Britannia
The Edinburgh Reporter is sad to report the death of Gaven Borthwick, fishmonger extraordinaire and owner of Armstrongs of Stockbridge. The window displays at Armstrongs are always amazing, and the staff very knowledgable about their product and how to cook it.
The funeral will take place on Monday 17 March 2014 and as a mark of respect the shop will be closed on Tuesday 18 March 2014.
We were saddened to hear that the editor of The Edinburgh Guide John Ritchie died suddenly last Saturday. He was editor of the Guide which covered all kinds of news but especially the Festival, and also founded community radio station Black Diamond FM. The funeral will be held at Rosslyn Chapel on Friday 14 March at 1.30pm. There is a page of tributes to John on the website which you can access here.
Co-founder of Robert Anthony Jewellers in Rose Street, David Henderson also died suddenly last week and the funeral took place yesterday. Mr Henderson is survived by his wife Anne and three sons to whom we extend our deepest sympathies.

EDINBURGH’S employers are among those backing a national work-based qualification to help young people secure employment.
Companies across Scotland are offering work placements and assessing young people to help them achieve an SQA approved ‘Certificate of Work Readiness’.
Employer demand for the qualification is high, as recent figures show that more than 1000 businesses across Scotland have shown their support by providing placements.
The qualification was developed by Skills Development Scotland (SDS) in partnership with the business community and gives unemployed young people the chance to learn in a work setting.
Recruiting employers will then know that an applicant has the skills for the workplace as the SQA approved Certificate of Work Readiness is only awarded following a successful assessment by an employer.
Michelle Gibson, Project Manager for the Certificate of Work Readiness at SDS, said: “Since the qualification was launched, we’ve had many cases of young people being kept on permanently by the employer they were placed with. This shows they just needed the chance to prove themselves.”
