There were many people in Waverley Station this morning to greet the 1927 steam train which then proceeded to Gleneagles with VIPs and the Ryder Cup on board.
It will be exactly one year today that the 40th Ryder Cup begins, and today both Ryder Cup captains were on hand to take the actual cup to Gleneagles.
The Ryder Cup Ambassadors were also on board. The Edinburgh Reporter spotted Alan Hansen Ruud Gullit and James Nesbitt. The First Minister was also there to welcome the two captains, and is meeting them later at the golf course to unveil a flagstone marking improvements at the railway station and investment in improving the transport infrastructure ahead of next year’s event. The organisers want most people to travel to Gleneagles by train next September.
The Edinburgh Reporter got a little footage of the event but as you can see there was a complete media scrum.
It looked as though the VIPs on the train were being well fed and watered on their journey, and later the celebrations will continue at Perth Concert Hall for an ‘Audience with the Ryder Cup Captains’ . There will be an up close and personal Q & A and there is a chance on Twitter to quiz the captains. Entertainment will be provided by Fred Macaulay and Hue and Cry.
When the train reached Gleneagles European Trade Commissioner, Karel De Gucht, was on hand to greet the two Ryder Cup captains.
