The White House Historical Association and the United States Consulate General Edinburgh honoured the history of President Abraham Lincoln and the leadership which his statue at the Old Calton Burial Ground in Edinburgh represents in a wreath placement ceremony for Presidents’ Day.
United States Consul General Jack Hillmeyer, Edinburgh Central Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) Angus Robertson, The Rt Hon Lord Provost of Edinburgh, Robert Aldridge, and Edinburgh councillor Amy McNeese-Mechan all took part in the ceremony and celebration.
This is the third year the ceremony has taken place, as part of an annual global event led by the Washington D.C. – based White House Historical Association (WHHA) to mark the U.S. Presidents’ Day holiday.
The WHHA partners with U.S. embassies and consulates around the world for the U.S. Presidents’ Day Wreath Placement. Wreaths were placed at presidential statues and monuments in many nations, honouring the history of American presidents globally and underscoring the meaningful leadership that each memorial represents.
The Edinburgh memorial, the only American Civil War memorial located outside of the United States, was unveiled in 1893 to honour Scots who fought in the Union Army.
