Musselburgh Racecourse has been awarded an additional February race meeting by the British Horseracing Authority as the industry gets back in to full swing following an outbreak of equine flu.
It means the East Lothian track will stage back-to-back meetings with a total £100,000 prize fund on Wednesday and Thursday February 27 and 28 – and there will be free admission for racegoers on both days.
Musselburgh, which lost its premium bet365 Scottish Cheltenham Trials weekend due to adverse weather and then a substitute fixture to the equine flu ban, said offering free admission was a gesture of goodwill to disadvantaged race goers.
Musselburgh Racecourse general manager, Bill Farnsworth, said: “We have had an incredible run of back luck due to circumstances completely out with our control but we are delighted the BHA has awarded this additional fixture on 28 February.
“With double-header meetings it makes it more attractive for trainers who want to send horses to Musselburgh and this extra meeting is all the more welcome after the six day halt to racing which impacted on the whole racing industry.
“We will have more than £100,000 prize money on offer over the two days and we hope our regular race goers and other casual race goers will take full advantage of free admission on both days.”
