Edinburgh University men celebrated after winning the British Universities and Colleges Sport Trophy after a dramatic penalty stroke competition.

They students were level at 1-1 after normal time, Cardiff University having scored after 18 minutes of the second session and Edinburgh levelling with six minutes remaining of a tense game at Nottingham.

Will Harper-Lawrence who scored the equaliser from a rebound following a penalty corner.

And Edinburgh, who play in Division One of Scotland’s National League, then netted all five of their penalty strokes with Cardiff missing one.

Glasgow-born former Scottish international midfielder Gordon Amour slotted the key penalty stroke.

Eugene Connolly, who ran the bench, said that Edinburgh upped their game once then went behind.

And he added: “It’s the first time we have won this eight-year-old event and we’ve never been as far as the semi-final before.

“The boys have worked hard and done incredibly well and I’m delighted for them.

“I’m also delighted that Edinburgh University men have won a national title.”
