Skipper Sam Masters top scored with 12 points but Edinburgh Monarchs skidded to a 54-38 defeat at Peterborough Panthers in their final SGB Championship clash.

The result means that Edinburgh have not secured third place in the ten-strong table.

Earlier, Panthers hit Monarchs with 5-1 scorelines in the first two heats but skipper Sam Masters and Mark Riss combined to record a 5-1 in the third race to claw the score back to 11-7.

Two drawn heats followed but Panthers upped a gear and were 30-18 ahead after Heat Eight.

Peterborough moved 41-27 in front three races later but back-to-back 4-2 scorelines for Edinburgh closed the gap to 45-35 with two heats remaining.

But Panthers powered to a 5-1 in the second-last heat and closed the match out with a 4-2 in the last race.
