In-form Edinburgh Monarchs powered to the top of the SGB Championship despite a storming performance from stand-in Richie Worrall of Glasgow Tigers.
He won three of his five heats in collecting 13 points but Monarchs led from start to finish against new-look Redcar Bears and finished the Teeside squad off with a 5-1 in the second last race.
German racer Mark Riss was followed home by Max Clegg who punched the air in delight after enduring a poor start to the season.
Monarchs were always in front and by the end of Heat Eight they led by eight points.
Max Clegg powered to victory in the following race with Eric Riss third to extend the lead to ten points.
They never looked back and ran out comfortable winners to edge arch rivals Glasgow Tigers off the summit of the ten-strong division.
Ricky Wells, Monarchs’ second-top scorer, said: “It was good to get the win but Richie beat me on three occasions.”
