The new 1400 pupil high school controversially built in Portobello Park was officially opened by the Lord Provost earlier today. He unveiled a plaque which will have pride of place in the new building.

All the dignitaries and officials present at the opening were entertained by the school orchestra, singers, dancers and a bit of Edwin Morgan poetry from headteacher Ruth Mackay.

A beautiful naturally lit building it appears from those we spoke to that this is now regarded very much a new start for the school who have a truly 21st century learning space.

Tomorrow the school is holding an open day for any members of the public who would like to see it from 10am to 2pm. There is of course a swimming pool and outdoor pitches all of which will be run by Edinburgh Leisure.
