Glasgow City FC and Hibernian LFC will go head-to-head tonight in a battle for the SWPL Cup at Ainslie Park, Edinburgh. Glasgow City FC will be looking to clinch the trophy for the fifth time in a row, while Hibernian will be hoping it’s third time lucky having lost out to City on the last two attempts.
In the only meeting between the sides this season, Glasgow City came out on top 2-0. However, Lucy Graham of Hibernian LFC believes that won’t faze the team. “It’s a huge game, but we’re ready for it” she said. “We know Glasgow City well and even though we didn’t perform well or get the result we wanted last time out, I’m confident we break their hold on this trophy.”
For Glasgow City FC though, they’ll be hoping to continue their winning streak. They’ve won all their domestic games this season, including a record 26-0 win on their last outing in the SWF Scottish Cup. Midfielder, Erin Cuthbert, who scores four goals in that match said, “We came away with a result on Sunday and a number of our regulars got 90 minutes under their belt.
“Hibs have a really talented squad though and we’ll need to nullify that threat to make sure we win, but we’ve got a winning mentality in the team. We want to win and to keep our streak going.”
Scottish Women’s Football and The Scottish Women’s Premier League have also announced that kids will go free to the final.
Talking about the idea, Lucy Graham, said: “This is a fantastic initiative. Anything which brings young people, both boys and girls, along to watch women’s football and to get engaged with the sport is brilliant. Not only does this offer increase the match attendance, it will inspire the next generation of female talent.
At only 17 years-old, Erin is one of the youngest players in the Glasgow City squad. Talking about the Kids Go Free campaign, she said, “It’s a great idea. The more people we can get coming to the games the better. It will also create role models, whether they be from Hibs or Glasgow City. These role models will then inspire young girls to take part in the sport and be the best they can be.”
Vivienne MacLaren, Director of Media and Communications for SWF, said “We’re delighted to launch this ‘Kids Go Free’ campaign. Increasing attendances at matches and getting women involved in the sport is vital, and this campaign does both. We might even find a few adults who come along with their children becoming interested in the sport, supporting it and even playing in the future.”
