Following the news yesterday that Kath Mainland, Chief Executive of the Festival Fringe Society, will step down in February next year, Councillor Richard Lewis, Edinburgh’s Festivals and Events Champion, said: “Kath Mainland has worked to great effect with and for festivals for over 20 years.  As the first chief executive of Edinburgh’s Fringe – the world’s largest festival of the arts -Kath has overseen the extraordinary development of the event and represented Edinburgh and  the Festival Fringe Society across the world.

“In her seven years in the post she has innovated the box office services and online presence, and maintained and advocated for the Fringe’s core open-door ethos. With her commitment to festivals and passion for the arts, she will be missed and will certainly be a major asset to the Melbourne Festival.”

Running from the 17 – 21 November at the King’s Theatre, the Edinburgh Gang Show includes incredible song and dance numbers from pop sensation Sam Smith to classic musicals such as Miss Saigon and many more, as well as laugh out loud sketches.

All The Young Nudes – life drawing sessions. If you’d like to get more experience of life drawing, these weekly sessions at Cabaret Voltaire could be just what you’re looking for, and there’s one on tonight at 7pm.  All The Young Nudes (ATYN) offers music and two or three models, normally of varying shapes and sizes. One model starts with quick poses, designed to loosen you up and get you ready to draw for a longer sitting. The second model will normally start with a couple of 15 minute poses and then move on to a 30 minute study before the group breaks at 8pm for a pint.

There’s no tuition here but everyone is welcome and there are lots of people around to give you pointers if you want or need them. ATYN supplies boards and clips, and also sells a wonderful array of materials if you fancy trying something new!

There’s no experience or booking required for this event, which costs £5 per session, but if you want to swan in before the crowds and grab a good seat you can buy a ticket in advance via eventbrite here (transaction fee applies). Otherwise just go along to Cabaret Voltaire, 36 Blair Street at 7pm.

The Centre for the Moving Image in partnership with Film Hub Scotland and funded by Creative Scotland’s Screen Skills Fund  has launched the Step Ahead Mentorship Programme.

Step Ahead is looking for eight ambitious Scottish-based individuals, employed or freelance, who are working in any specialism within film exhibition and who would benefit from high-level management mentoring to enhance their knowledge and abilities, allowing them to progress their careers and the overall sector.

Each participant will receive a dedicated film industry professional as their mentor, complementary to their career path and skills base, who will provide advice and guidance over four meetings between January and June 2016.

The programme includes allowance for financial support for mentees to attend other UK or international festivals or venues for an inside look at how they operate, and mentoring will be completed by training and networking activities during the 70th edition of the Edinburgh International Film Festival, which runs 15 to 26 June 2016.
