Holyrood Rocks comes to Edinburgh’s Bongo Club on 9 October. This is a music competition but with a political edge as it is based on the eight areas of Scotland which vote for list MSPs. Some heats have already taken place.

“The competition is intended to encourage young people’s engagement in the political process, particularly among 16 and 17 year olds, who have been given the right to vote in Scottish Parliamentary and local elections. The Electoral Commission will be represented at each heat giving attendees the opportunity to register to vote.

“By showcasing young musical talent whilst relaying the importance of democratic rights and the significance of the right to vote, Holyrood Rocks 2015 hopes to encourage voter engagement in Scotland and beyond.”

The national final will be held in the Scottish Parliament’s Main Hall on Saturday 31st October, featuring winners from the 8 regional heats handpicked by the judges.

The big offering at cinemas this week is Scotland. The Scottish landscape is the star of the new Macbeth from Justin Kurzel which had its UK premiere in Edinburgh last weekend according to our review which you can read here.

HO00002733Tonight for one night only at Cineworld you can get some culture with The Marriage of Figaro from the Royal Opera House at 6.45pm.

HO00003013The new thriller based on the life of the Kray twins is called Legend and is showing across cinemas in the city. Tom Hardy of Mad Max:Fury Road fame plays both characters differentiated only by subtle body language apparently!

Various times here at Cineworld.

This one is only for those of you with strong nerves. The Walk is the story of Philippe Petit who walked the tightrope between the Twin Towers in 1974. Sir Ben Kingsley plays his mentor. More about times at Cineworld here.

theinternposterRobert de Niro plays a 70-something intern with Anne Hathaway in the role of his boss. Not on tonight but showing for the rest of the week at the Dominion.
