Kyle Ruxton, Edinburgh

Six year-old Kyle Ruxton from Edinburgh has won Living Streets Walk Once a Week badge design competition.

This meant he had to get up extra early on Tuesday morning to go to London to collect his prize, travelling by Virgin Trains East Coast 07.30 service from Edinburgh to London.

Kyle, aged six, received a trophy for designing a collectible badge which will be used to encourage school children to walk to school.

Kyle and his family were presented with a giant replica of the winning badge by Virgin train crew before boarding train.

Kyle’s design, featuring rhinos, was one of eleven chosen from 120,000 entries on this year’s theme Our Healthy Planet. Of his design, Kyle who attends Clermiston Primary School, said: “I chose to draw a mummy and baby rhino because they are in danger.”

Kyle’s design will be turned into one of the actual badges made from recycled yoghurt pot material for the UK–wide WoW scheme in 2015/16 along with 10 other winning designs. Each design will feature on one of the monthly badges awarded to children who take part in the scheme. Around 300,000 of the badges are distributed each month.

Living Streets Scotland Schools Coordinator, Chris Thompson, said: “This year we had more than 1,400 finalists from over 380 schools all over the country, and in total, over 120,000 children took part. It’s great to have a winner in Edinburgh for such a well respected competition. These badges are real incentives for children to take part in WoW; not only does it allow them to get creative but it also encourages them to walk to school and get some physical activity in their day. Kyle’s badge will be used in schools in Scotland and throughout the UK; he should be very proud.”

Kyle received a trophy which featured his award winning design. He also received a goody bag and a certificate.
