Police are appealing for witnesses following an attempted robbery which took place around 4.20am this morning in Newton Street, Gorgie.
A 45-year-old private hire driver attended at an address in the street to collect a fare.
The suspect approached the taxi driver and presented a knife at the driver before demanding he hand over his money.
A struggle ensued and the male made off empty handed onto Wheatfield Street where he was lost to sight.
Officers are now urging anyone who can assist with their enquiries to come forward.
The suspect is described as white, 18-25-years-old with a medium build, short brown hair and a clean-shaven face. He was wearing a dark blue hooded zipper top, dark trousers and white and black trainers.
Detective Sergeant Robbie Wallace said: “The victim was not injured during this incident, nor did he surrender his money. Nevertheless, we are treating this incident seriously and are keen to hear from anyone who remembers seeing any suspicious activity in the Gorgie area on Thursday morning.
“In addition, anyone who recognises the description of the suspect, or who has information relevant to this investigation is also asked to contact police immediately.”
