Police are appealing for witnesses following an assault and attempted robbery in the city centre.
The incident happened around 10.45pm on Sunday in Princes Street.
A man had been out with friends during the day and had just left McDonald’s restaurant on St Andrew’s Street and was walking to meet his wife when a male approached and asked him for money.
When he refused the request, the 58-year-old was punched to the face, knocking him unconscious and causing him to fall to the ground.
The suspect made off towards North Bridge and two young men came to assist the victim.
As a result of the attack, the man suffered serious injury to his mouth, which resulted in the loss of a tooth.
Officers are now urging anyone who can assist with their enquiries to come forward.
The suspect is described as white, early to mid twenties, between 5ft 6ins and 5ft 8ins tall with a medium build and a foreign accent.
Detective Constable Carole Sneddon said: “As a result of this vicious assault, the victim suffered painful injuries to his mouth, which required dental treatment. However, he did not surrender any of his belongings.
“Anyone who was on Princes Street late on Sunday evening and remembers seeing anything suspicious is asked to contact police immediately.
“In particular, we would like to speak with the two men who came to assist the victim and a taxi driver who also spoke to him following the attack.
“Similarly, anyone who recognises the description of the suspect or who has any further information relevant to this investigation is also asked to get in touch.”
