Two elderly brothers were found dead inside a house in Gracemount, around 5pm last night.
The men have been named locally as John McIlwain and Robert McIlwain.
The Edinburgh Reporter understands that both men sustained gunshot wounds.
Police have confirmed they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
Armed officers attended the scene in Lockerby Cottages and surrounding roads were closed.
A Police Scotland statement said: “Police in Edinburgh attended a property in Lockerby Cottages near Gracemount at around 5pm this evening.
“On gaining entry, two elderly men were found seriously injured and were pronounced dead at the scene.
“Enquiries are continuing but police are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.”
