Police Scotland have confirmed the identity of a man who died following a road collision at Junction 2 of the M8 on Thursday 10th April as 35-year-old Ian Smollet from Livingston, West Lothian.

Mr Smollet, who was a serving officer with Police Scotland, exited a vehicle that stopped on the hard shoulder of the westbound carriageway at around 3.40pm before being involved in a collision with a Leyland DAF tanker truck.

He was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where he later passed away due to the injuries he sustained.

Road Policing Officers responded to the scene and closed the road for around five hours while they conducted an investigation.

Enquiries into the full circumstances surrounding this incident are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to come forward.

Chief Superintendent Gill Imery said: “It is with the deepest regret I can confirm that Detective Constable Ian Smollet, who served in the Lothians and Scottish Borders Division, has died following Thursday’s collision on the M8.

“Our sympathies are with his family, friends and colleagues at this very difficult time.

“Road Policing Officers are continuing their investigation and I would urge any members of the public who witnessed the collision, or who believe they can assist with this enquiry to contact police immediately.”
