Councillor Tom Buchanan who sadly died last year is being remembered by the council in the form of a Scholarship set up in his name. Now the first scholars appointed have been announced.
Three enterprising apprentices at the City of Edinburgh Council have been recruited as scholars on a programme in memory of Councillor Tom Buchanan. It is hoped that the scholarship will secure their future career working in the field of economic development.
The Buchanan Scholarship has been developed in recognition of the late Cllr Buchanan’s tremendous dedication and work on the development of Edinburgh’s economy in his five years as Convener of the Economic Development Committee. Cllr Buchanan had always strongly supported youth employment in his time as Economic Development Convener.
Cllr Frank Ross, Convener of the Economy Committee, said: “The scholarship programme is strongly aligned with the Edinburgh Guarantee initiative so can tap into the positive employer relationships that have been built in the city and aims to add value to existing support for the career aspirations of young people.
“Tom was a passionate supporter of the Edinburgh Guarantee and so I feel as well as benefitting young people, this is a fitting tribute to him.
“The standard of all the candidates was very high. I was very impressed with how the young people presented themselves and I look forward to watching them develop.”
The first recipients of the Scholarship are Jemma Dommershuizen, Paige Evans and John Beaton. All three will work towards their SVQ Level 4 in Business Administration as Modern Apprentice Economic Development Assistants.
