Police in Edinburgh are appealing for witnesses following a theft from a city-centre library.

The incident happened sometime between 2pm on Monday and 3.45pm on Tuesday within a stairwell at the Central Library on George IV Bridge.

A display cabinet was accessed during this time and a small sketchbook containing drawings from 19th Century artist Henry R Westwood was stolen.

The book contained pencil etchings of various iconic locations in Edinburgh and the surrounding areas circa 1890 and is valued at around £1000.

Anyone who can assist officers with their enquiries is asked to come forward.

PC Chris Smart said: “Henry R Westwood was an Edinburgh-born artist whose work was being showcased as part of a minor exhibition within the library. Although he was not particularly well known, library staff had hoped to generate awareness of his work and the sketchbook is of historical interest.

“Anyone who comes across this book or can help trace those responsible for its theft is asked to contact police immediately.”

Those with information can contact Police Scotland on 101 or alternatively, the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
