Taxi Driver text Appeal – Pedal on Parliament 2 – Farewell to James Gillespie’s High School – City Centre Consultation – Tonight at the Cameo
Police in Edinburgh have sent a mass text to taxi drivers in the Capital as they bid to trace a driver who is thought to have information relevant to an ongoing murder investigation.

Steven Barrett (27) died at his home in Lochend Butterfly Way on Saturday, 6 April 2013.

Following a major investigation a 23-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with Steven’s death. Officers are continuing to investigate the incident, and are keen to trace a taxi driver who picked up two men and a woman from George Street in the early hours of Saturday, April 6, just after midnight.

The driver took the trio to a takeaway opposite the Playhouse Theatre, before dropping them off at Lochend Butterfly Way.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: -“We are keen to trace this taxi driver, and we have sent a mass text to the five thousand or so licensed taxi drivers in Edinburgh, in the hope that someone will recall picking up the fare.

“At this time we do not know if the three individuals were picked up by a taxi cab or private hire vehicle, and we continue to appeal to any driver who remembers picking up these three individuals to contact police immediately.”

Anyone with information should contact Police Scotland on 101, or make an anonymous report through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Today is the last day for you to comment on the City Centre consultation here on the Council website.  The report approved by the Transport and Environment Committee in March said:-“Edinburgh City Centre forms the commercial heart of Southeast Scotland and Scotland at large. Its role as a centre for finance and business, retail, entertainment and leisure is widely recognised. Its setting in a World Heritage Site provides an iconic image of the area as well as unique opportunities and challenges. There is, however, a general recognition that the area could perform better as a place for living, working and visiting through a more coordinated approach to the development, management and promotion of the area.”

Part of the plans relate to the introduction of the trams in 2014, and the need to ensure improved access to the city centre for pedestrians and road users.  It is proposed that buses will use George Street for eastbound traffic and Princes Street for westbound traffic only which will halve the number of buses using the city’s iconic street.
