The glass on the western face of the Balmoral clock was damaged by the storm and a piece next to the Roman numeral V had to be taken out for repair on Tuesday morning.

A spokesperson for the Balmoral confirmed what had happened: “The Balmoral conduct routine inspections of the iconic Edinburgh clock tower each morning and evening.

“This morning a small piece of glass which slots in between the numbers on the frame on the clock facing towards Princes Street Gardens was removed for repair. The number five on the clock face is in position as usual.

“The glaziers were contacted first thing this morning by The Balmoral and are repairing the glass. As usual, daily routine checks of the clock will be carried out this evening and again tomorrow morning.”
