SGB Championship Shield: Edinburgh Monarchs 44, Workington Comets 46
Edinburgh Monarchs failed to do arch rivals Glasgow Tigers a favour and the West of Scotland side were knocked out of the SGB Championship Shield.
Workington Comets needed at least a draw to progress from the Borders Section.
And they went one better by winning narrowly 46-44 at Armadale.
Remember, it was the Armadale side who sensationally elbowed Glasgow out of the Knockout Cup recently.
So Glasgow’s bid for silverware has been severely dented.
Nicolai Klindt was best for Comets with 11 points with former Tigers and Monarchs star Dan Bewley next best on nine points.
Skipper Eric Riss collected 13 points for the home side with former Workington star Ricky Wells on ten points.
SGB Championship: Glasgow Tigers 47, Peterborough Panthers 43
Glasgow: Richie Worrall 10, Lewis Kerr 8, Claus Vissing 10, Paul Starke 5, Chris Harris 10, Jack Thomas 3, James Sarjeant 1
Peterborough: Scott Nicholls 13, Mikkel B Andersen (guest) 6, Bradley Wilson-Dean 10, Michael Palm Toft 5, rider replacement for Ulrich Ostergaard, Simon Lambert 9, Tom Bacon 0.
Ice cool Richie Worrall won the final heat with team-mate Chris Harris in second place to earn victory for Glasgow Tigers over Peterborough Panthers in a tense, see-saw battle in the SGB Championship.
The sides were level at 42-42 going into the last race but Worrall and Harris were sharper from the gate.
They left Panthers’ pair of Scott Nicholls and Bradley Wilson-Dean in their slipstream to collect a match-winning 5-1.
Earlier, Tigers were 22-20 behind after seven races when Bradley Wilson-Dean and Michael Palm Toft collected a 5-1.
Glasgow replied in Heat Ten with a 5-1 with Richie Worrall and Lewis Kerr coming home first and second to take the scoreline to 31-29.
The home side were level again at 33-33 after a 4-2 from Panthers in the next race, but two heats later a 4-2 from Tigers edged them ahead 40-38.
But it was all-square at 42-42 after Palm Toft won the second-last heat with Paul Stark second and Panthers’ Simon Lambert third.
That set-up a nerve-tinging final race and the meeting was delayed as paramedics attended to a fan.
But Worrall and Harris did the business as Tigers won 47-43. The sides meet again at Peterborough on Sunday.
