The Eric Liddell Centre in Morningside offers support services to a wide range of people in Edinburgh, principally those who have dementia or those who are carers.
Now the charity is aiming for a higher profile and one of the ways it is doing that is enlisting the help of its patron author Alexander McCall-Smith and former international rugby player Chris Paterson. The pair will both speak at the Going for Gold event which is being held at the Sheraton Grand on 5 December 2017.
They will be accompanied by Susan Morrison who will no doubt have them laughing in the aisles as she comperes the event and music from St Mary’s Music School.
You can help by buying a ticket for the event or by donating an auction prize.

The care charity which has its base at the beautiful building at Holy Corner is funded in a variety of ways and is run by CEO John McMillan. He told us : “Our top priority in terms of care is dementia care so some funding comes from the Health and Social Care Partnership. There is a myriad of other health-related and community-based projects and services. We look to fundraise ourselves from our donors and we also apply for a range of grants and funding support as and when these are available.”
Some of the services which the charity runs are provided outside the centre. McMillan is proud of the building itself and he explained to us how it is used while the charity’s volunteers also go further afield. He said : “We are very fortunate with the Eric Liddell Centre. It is a beautiful refurbished former church. It gives us a great base to work from.
“We receive referrals from across Edinburgh for our dementia daycare initiative and we also provide a range of services throughout the city. For example, we run a citywide carers’ initiative which means our staff and volunteers work in the centre and in other parts of Edinburgh.
“We provide support to carers who may of course be members of the family. Sometimes being a carer can overwhelm your life.
“So we train our volunteers to become befrienders and we match them to carers. This means that the health and wellbeing of carers themselves are also looked after.
“If you as a carer need a break then sometimes just going out for a coffee is all that is needed.”
Here John tells us about the fundraiser.

St Columba’s Hospice is switching on the lights of its Tree of Remembrance on Monday 11 December in Charlotte Square Gardens, Edinburgh at 6.30pm. This year, the hospice marks its 40th anniversary and with it, four decades of its Light Up A Life appeal.
More than 2000 people came along to the event last year, the highest attendance to date. The lights on the 40ft tree symbolise dedications which have been made in memory of people who have died, giving the tree special meaning to those who have made one to remember a loved one.
Charlotte Square Gardens will open at 5.30pm to spectators, with refreshments available courtesy of Starbucks. A local community choir will be singing Christmas carols and the ceremony will begin at 6.30pm with Sir Tom Farmer making a short speech, followed by the lights being turned on. The tree will remain lit until Friday 5 January.
Everyone is welcome to visit the Gardens for the service and can also make a dedication if they would like to. Dedications can be made online here or by calling 0131 551 1381.

There are architects, artists, astronomers, botanists, doctors, entertainers, historians, horticulturists, ministers, military personnel, photographers, scientists, sculptors, teachers – all manner of occupations. And there’s wildlife too, in this Local Biodiversity Site.
