Police  are investigating following a serious assault in Prestonfield Avenue which took place around 11.30am on Thursday, March 9.

A 32-year-old was approached by an unknown man who attacked him with a weapon.

When this initial attack was unsuccessful, two more men became involved in the attack.

A male friend of the victim subsequently approached and helped to stop the attack.  The three suspects then left in an unknown direction.

The victim sustained a serious, but not life-threatening, head injury.  He received treatment at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and was later released.

Police were called and officers are now appealing for witnesses.

The first suspect is described as a white man, around 30-year-old, with a slight build.  He was possibly wearing a top with the hood up.

The second suspect is also a white man, believed to be around 16-17-years-old.  There is no description available for the third suspect.

Detective Constable Stephen Herd of Gayfield CID said:  “This was a thuggish attack undertaken by three men in public view.

“Thankfully the victim only sustained a minor injury, but the consequences of this assault could have been much more serious.

“We are eager to speak to anyone who may have witnessed this incident. I would ask anyone who was in the Prestonfield Avenue area on the morning of Thursday, March 9, and saw this attack, to get in touch with us as soon as possible.”
