Mosque seen from George Square

Police are making a further appeal for further information following the fire-raising at the Central Mosque, Potterrow which took place around 2.10 a.m. on Sunday morning.

An object was thrown at the building, which caused minor fire damage to the door and a small bush within the garden area.

Officers are now looking to trace three women and a man who were in George Square, near to the Meadows at around 2am, shortly before the incident.

They are possibly of Asian appearance and are understood to have been involved in a verbal altercation with a man, who is believed to be responsible for the fire-raising.

The man, who is being treated as a suspect, is described as a white man in his late twenties.  He is around 5ft 10″ in height, has a medium build and a shaved head.  He was wearing a dark checked shirt and black t-shirt with white writing underneath.

Detective Inspector Grant Johnston said:  “We are eager to trace the man and three women who were seen to have an verbal altercation with the suspect, as we believe they may be key witnesses who can further our inquiries.

“We are still following a positive line of inquiry, nevertheless we are still keen to speak to members of the public who have information or were in the area at the time.

“Anyone who believes they have information that can assist our investigation is asked to get in touch.”
