The public services provider, Amey, has released its apprentices to volunteer during Scottish Apprenticeship Week and give their local youth hostel a makeover.
The company’s apprentices are working towards their Duke of Edinburgh award and this means they have to give some time to their local communities each week. They have worked in charity shops and coached children’s sports teams.
This week will be a bit different however as they will be painting the inside of Edinburgh Youth Hostel and carrying out a bit of maintenance.
Chief Executive of Amey, Mel Ewell said: “We are extremely proud of our apprenticeship programme and the work we do to support both the professional and personal development of young people. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award allows our apprentices to gain crucial teamwork and leadership skills that serve them throughout their career. I am delighted that our apprentices are able to offer their support to the SYHA this Scottish Apprenticeship Week.”
Peter Westgarth, Chief Executive of the DofE, said: “As a partner of the DofE Charity for 14 years, Amey has long supported the development of young people and local communities. Through the Volunteering section of their DofE programmes apprentices give back to others whilst developing valuable skills and attributes for both life and work.
“We’re thrilled to be working in partnership with Amey, YHA and SYHA on such a worthwhile project that will have far-reaching benefits within local communities and the apprentices’ own personal and professional development.”
Keith Legge, CEO of SYHA Hostelling Scotland said: “As a not for profit organisation, we rely on the contribution of volunteers to help with a wide variety of projects in our youth hostels. The apprentices are undertaking much-need redecoration and maintenance that otherwise we would have had to spend money on. Volunteers help us save money and every penny we save means more can be invested in the network giving young people and their families a great experience when they stay with us, whether that’s part of a school trip or a holiday.”
Scottish Apprenticeship Week runs from 29 February to 4 March 2016.
