2011_10 Police signs 12

Police are investigating following a serious sexual assault which happened around 12.30am this morning when a 19-year-old woman was walking along Newmills Road in Balerno.  A man approached her from behind, threatened her, and took her into a neighbouring field where he sexually assaulted her.

The man then left the woman and the location.  She returned to her home and subsequently contacted police.

Officers are now appealing for information in order to trace the man responsible for this incident.

He is described as a white man with a slim build.  He is around 6ft tall with possibly long hair.  He was wearing a grey hoodie and dark jeans. He may also speak with an Edinburgh or English accent.

Detective Inspector Grant Johnston said:  “This was a distressing attack on a young woman and we are eager to trace the suspect as soon as possible.

“Anyone who was in the Newmills Road area in the early hours of this morning and saw anything suspicious is asked to contact us as soon as possible.

“Similarly, anyone who recognises the description of the suspect is also asked to call Police Scotland immediately.”
