Professional Rugby

As reported elsewhere, Edinburgh lost 20-17 to Ulster on Friday night, despite the Irish side finishing the match with 13 men. Leading until the 51st minute, the home side were then playing catch up for the rest of the match. Tom Heathcote missed six kicks during the match, but it would be unfair to lay all the blame at his door as other, more experienced players also had the odd aberration.

This leaves Edinburgh in eighth place in the table as we went to press, equal on points – 33 – with Scarlets and Connacht in sixth and seventh, but having played one more match.

BT Premiership

It was 2-2 for the Edinburgh sides in the BT Premiership on Saturday as Currie and Boroughmuir both won, while Heriots and Edinburgh Accies both lost.

Boroughmuir won 20-19 away at Glasgow Hawks and Currie won away 22-19 at Stirling. Heriots lost out 25-23 away in Ayr and Accies suffered the biggest margin of defeat with a 14-7 loss in the Borders to Hawick.

Despite the results all four teams retain their relative positions in the table with Heriots on top, although nursing a narrower margin of seven points with 63 and Currie are still in sixth with 38. Accies and Boroughmuir remain at the foot of the table, Accies in tenth with 24 points, but ‘Muir have closed the gap to eighth place Hawks and are now equal, points-wise, with 32, but have lost one more game, so stay ninth.

BT National League, Div. 1

Both Watsonians and Stewarts-Melville put in convincing performances at the weekend in their drive for promotion to the Premiership. Watsonians had the bigger winning margin of the two with a 47-5 win at Myreside over Peebles, while Stew-Mel travelled to Dundee and beat the former Premiership side 29-13.

Stew-Mel are now 17 points adrift of 100% Selkirk in second with 65 points and ‘Sonians are two places behind, in fourth with 54. However, with the wintry weather claiming a few fixtures, there is still some catching up to be done before the final places are sorted.
