Urbane Art Gallery’s new exhibition which starts today is a bold, bright and some might say brave display of three of France’s more avant garde and esoteric artists.
The zingy, brightly-coloured, dynamic paintings of Mathieu Bernard Martin (MBM), Tehos and Sofu fight for your attention as they clash with each other and shout at you from the walls of the Jeffrey Street gallery. No subtle or understated stuff here, as this stimulating exhibition is sure to cause a reaction – whether good or bad depends on your perspective. All highly successful artists in their own right across the world, this is their first showing in Scotland, and Urbane Art Gallery is delighted to be presenting them to an erstwhile demure Edinburgh public.
Tracey Robertson, gallery director says: ”In a city which prides itself on its culture and traditions, we want to show art that is unconventional and exotic – something that will blow your mind. This kind of work looks striking on the walls of a New York attic apartment, but it looks equally stunning in a classical Georgian house. It just needs someone with style and imagination to make a bold statement with art in their own home. A painting or any work of art always look better at home than on display in the gallery.”
MBM hails from Paris. His work is full of gushing energy and thick strokes with bright colours. Tehos, who is from Monaco, works in a variety of mediums including collage, digital & video art, and sculpture. Sofu is based near Toulouse. His work has been described as a cross between classicism and urban graffiti. The show goes on until 16th November.
