HARLEY BROTHERS – A Lithographic Legacy

- The year is 1956 in Edinburgh, St James Square ( Now the St James Centre)
- The small commercial lithographers firm of Harley Brothers
- Collaborated with both well-known and emerging artists of the day
- Produced over 100 editions of artists’ lithographs with over 35 artists
- Inspired by the Paris artist’s studio system of the time
- Sold through the St Georges Gallery in London
- Artists included John Piper, Anne Redpath, Terry Frost, Robin Phillipson, Elizabeth Blackadder & many others
- Led to the forming of a similar studio in London at the Curwen Studio in 1959
- Led to founding of Il Bisonte lithographic studio in Florence, Italy 1959
- Led to the Founding of Edinburgh Printmakers Workshop in 1967
- Harleys disappeared in 1962/63 when the St James quarter was demolished
Artists represented in the exhibition include – Bernard Cheese, Michael Ayrton, Anne Redpath,
David Michie, John Piper, Henry Moore, Elizabeth Frink, Cyril Wilson, John Houston & Roy Wood
Exhibition will also include – Michael Waight, constructions – Jessica Briggs, jewellery & Deirdre Hawthorne, ceramics.
