TER Greyfriars Bobby

Today at 12.30 the service to commemorate the wee dog who was so faithful to his master that he stayed by his grave for 14 years, will take place in Greyfriar’s Kirkyard.

The Lord Provost the Rt Hon Donald Wilson will attend along with the minister of Greyfriars Kirk. The office of Lord Provost has a particular connection with the dog as it was a previous Lord Provost, Sir William Chambers, who paid for the dog licence, essential for any self-respecting dog in nineteenth century Edinburgh.

The significance of today 14 January is that it was on this day in 1872 that the Skye terrier died aged 16.

The Lord Provost will welcome guests before Dr Andrew Gardiner, Veterinary Clinical lecturer at the Royal School of Veterinary Studies, speaks on Bobby’s treatment at the Dick Vets.

Also in attendance will be Bobby lookalike Maggie the Cairn terrier, who will be wearing a new coat and badge designed specifically for Greyfriars Bobby, while piper Jennifer Hutcheon will play ‘Tribute to Greyfriars Bobby, written specially for the occasion last year.

Strathleven Artizans will provide the Guard of Honour.

Unfortunately The Edinburgh Reporter cannot be at today’s ceremony, so our photo is from last year’s event.
