Royal Infirmary Edinburgh does not have clean bill of health – City-wide Clean up – Book Week Scotland at the Scottish Seabird Centre – Today at the Cameo – White Christmas opens tonight
According to a report just published by Healthcare Improvement Scotland, it appears that the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh ‘could do better’.
An unannounced inspection was carried out at the hospital on 2 October 2013, when the inspectors arrived to carry out a follow-up after two visits on 30 April and 1 May this year. The inspectors usually carry out an unannounced visit to ensure that any previous recommendations have been complied with.
They visited 6 areas of the hospital and found that the hospital still has some way to go in ensuring that the message about standard infection control, including hand hygiene, is communicated to staff and implemented by them.
The inspectors have also recommended that all mattresses in the hospital are effectively cleaned to ensure the risk of cross infection is lowered, and that staff are reminded of the way that protective clothing should be disposed of.
The inspectors also said that staff should wear appropriate clothing in a clinical setting and that some were observed wearing lanyards, sleeves below the elbow, with untied hair and inappropriate jewellery.
The hospital has also been rapped over the knuckles for failure to clean commodes and the spaces around some patients’ beds when these areas were said to have been cleaned and made ready for use by a new patient.
The hospital has been given a month to deal with the four areas where action is required and can probably expect another visit to ensure that they have addressed the areas well enough.

As well as trying to stop littering in the city, another part of the initiative is to undertake clean ups across the city. The campaign will run until September 2014 and the first bid Day of Action is today.
Here are some that we have heard about:-
Wester Hailes – Meet at 09.30 – 10 am at Council Murrayburn premises. Clean-up will be ongoing between 10am-12.30pm in the Greenway area (any amount of time given is appreciated)
Grassmarket Meet at the Police Box at 12:00 noon.
Davidson’s Mains Park
Crewe Road Gardens from 11:00am till 1:00.
Great Junction Street area
Calton Hill meet at the City Dome

To celebrate Book Week Scotland, St Andrew’s Day, and the peak grey seal breeding season, the Scottish Seabird Centre will be holding storytelling sessions for youngsters. Janis Mackay, author of ‘The Wee Seal’ and the Magnus Finn books,will read from ‘The Wee Seal’ in two sessions:
– 2-5 year olds from 2.30pm until 3pm
– 6-12 year olds from 3-4pm
Admission to the readings is free.
