The Edinburgh Reporter is visiting Orkney this week and had the unique opportunity to capture two wave energy devices being developed by Edinburgh companies in one shot today.
The Pelamis wave energy converter is in the background being towed away from the EMEC test site, and in the foreground is Aquamarine Power’s Oyster 800 machine which is being tested too.
Pelamis is based in Leith where the wave device is built. The ScottishPower Renewables Pelamis P2 Machine recently completed a year of testing at the European Marine Energy Centre just west of Stromness.
Meanwhile Aquamarine Power recently received full consent from The Scottish Government for a 40MW wave farm off the north-west coast of Lewis, Scotland – making it the world’s largest fully-permitted ocean energy site.
