PUPILS’ POSTERS URGE DOG OWNERS TO CLEAN UP THEIR ACT
Pupils from East Craigs Primary School have offered up their design skills in the fight against dog fouling near their school.
Following concerns about dog fouling raised by residents in The City of Edinburgh Council’s Edinburgh People’s Survey, staff from the West Neighbourhood Community Safety Team have organised an awareness-raising day on Friday 8 March 2013.
Pupil-designed posters will be put up on the school fencing, encouraging dog owners to behave responsibly.
Starting at East Craigs Primary School at 8.30am, Environment Wardens will be joined by a Safer Neighbourhood Police Officer to give parents guidance on reporting dog fouling, and gather intelligence about offenders. Wardens have the power to issue on-the-spot Fixed Penalty Notices for dog fouling as necessary.
Officers will then be at the Barnton branch of the Co-operative Supermarket, Bughtlin Market, from 10am to 12pm, handing out information and contact details. Residents are encouraged to speak to officers about any concerns they may have.
Councillor Lesley Hinds, the city’s Environment Convener, said: “In our most recent survey, residents across Edinburgh told us that tackling dog fouling was a top priority, and we continue to take the issue extremely seriously – especially near schools, where pupils face a health risk.
“To tackle the problem, we need initiatives like today’s events in East Craigs, that encourage promote dog ownership, deal with enforcement, and encourage people to let us know where there are problems so we can target our resources most effectively.”
