Edible Estates get grant funding – Indecent assault – Scottish Police Authority meeting in Edinburgh this week – Love is in the Air! – It’s Good 2 Give!

Funding has been awarded by The Scottish Government’ Climate Challenge Fund to two projects in Edinburgh,

The first is a project called Edible Estates. This is run by Wester Hailes Health Agency and will be used to create gardens in which food can be grown in areas of Wester Hailes which would otherwise be unused. The second is a project in Leith to establish an arts centre in Great Junction Street.

This is what the Government announced:-

Wester Hailes Health Agency’s Edible Estates project will engage the residents of two large housing estates in the south west of Edinburgh to develop their local greenspace into an asset which supports sustainable lifestyles. The project will help to build the skills and capacity of residents of all ages to work together to regenerate degraded greenspaces throughout their estates. It will focus particularly upon the creation of ‘edible landscapes’ such as community orchards and food growing plots for local food production which will reduce the carbon footprint of the community. £290,519

Himalayan Centre Edinburgh Ltd’s Leith Community Climate Change project will support a community initiative to establish a low-carbon, sustainable centre for arts and culture, repurposing a disused B-listed building in Great Junction Street, Leith. Energy efficient measures will be installed when the building is renovated, while the second year of the project will see a Community Engagement Officer and five Climate Champions focusing on a community climate initiative. This initiative will work with local people to reduce the carbon footprint of their daily lives. £255,837

Lothian and Borders Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman was indecently assaulted in a common stair last week.

The incident happened just after 3am on Friday 1 March 2013 at an address in Barclay Terrace.

The 20-year-old victim had been on a night out in the city centre before returning home to her flat at Wrights House, Barclay Terrace, Edinburgh.

It is believed that a male followed her into the common stair, where he then grabbed her from behind and forced her to the ground and assaulted her.  The suspect then ran off into Barclay Terrace whilst the woman contacted police.

Since the assault, officers having been speaking to residents within the common stair and carrying out extensive CCTV enquiries with a view to obtaining a description of the man responsible for this attack.

Detectives are now urging anyone who was in the area at the time who saw something suspicious or can assist with their enquiries in any way to come forward.

The suspect is described as white, 20-25,  medium build and short dark brown hair. He was wearing a dark leather jacket and light blue baggy jeans.

Detective Constable Barry Murphy said: “While the victim suffered no physical injuries, she was left deeply distressed by this attack and we are keen to hear from anyone who remembers seeing anything suspicious in the Wrights House area of Barclay Terrace in the early hours of Friday morning last week.

“Similarly, anyone who recognises the description of the male, or who has any other information that can help with this investigation is also asked to contact police immediately.”
