Weekend Fire – Christmas trees – More Rubbish – Edinburgh Zoo Centenary – National Library workshop
A 43-year-old man and his four month old son has to be given oxygen by firefighters after a fire in their dishwasher left them suffering from smoke inhalation on Saturday evening.
The blaze broke out just after 10 pm when fire crews received a report of a house alight in Drumsheugh Place in the West End of the city.
Four pumps were sent to the four storey building and firefighters discovered a small fire in the dishwasher of one of the flats.
The occupants, a man and his four month old baby son, were treated at the scene by fire crews with oxygen and checked over by ambulance staff.
They did not require hospital treatment.
The dishwasher was removed from the premises and firefighters left the scene shortly before 11pm.

Our photo today shows you what not to do with your Christmas tree. This person has just taken the decorations off and thrown it on the pavement. But there is some guidance on the council website as to what you should really do to ensure you get rid of your trees. The council start their tree collection service from today.
Christmas tree recycling
You can recycle your real Christmas trees at the kerbside, no matter where you live.
To enable trees to be recycled residents are reminded to:
- Remove all decorations from the Christmas tree
- Cut the tree into 5ft lengths
- Do not place trees in plastic bags, as this means we cannot recycle it.
Christmas trees can be recycled at any of our three Community Recycling Centres and can be recycled using garden waste bins.
Christmas trees can also be recycled as follows:
Brown bin areas
If you have a brown bin or live in a brown bin area, place your Christmas tree at the kerbside, next to your bin, by 6am on your next schedule garden waste collection day.
Communal bin areas
For those who use communal bins, we will be collecting trees from 7 January. We will be collecting trees area by area.
For on-street communal bins, leave it beside your bin on the days listed below for your area.
For internal bin stores, please leave it at the kerbside on the days listed below for your area.

Another in our series of rubbish stories this morning unfortunately. Although the new fortnightly service is intended to cut down both the amount of waste we get rid of by introducing more recycling, and cut the cost to the council of dealing with it, there have been a few stories of people with mounds of waste outside their homes waiting for collection.
In Trinity there is another of these tales of woe which you can read here.

This year the Zoo will celebrate its 100th birthday. It was in 1913 that the zoo was opened for the first time and it would be fair to say that it has had mixed fortunes down the years. The Reporter recently visited Dublin Zoo and was struck by the huge difference from our capital offering. In Dublin the area is basically flat and offers very large areas to each animal group. In contrast the site at Corstorphine is very hilly, and some of the enclosures at least appear that they may meet only minimum size requirements.
Edinburgh Zoo is organising events to mark the centenary this year. First they commissioned a stamp design which was announced in December, and now they are showing films to all zoo visitors of the development of the attraction over the last 100 years. The films are being shown between 11 am and 3 pm in the Budongo Lecture Theatre every Tuesday from 17 January 2013. More details here.
