The 1927 company always brings something innovative, visually striking, and perhaps unique shows to Edinburgh.
In previous Festivals they provided performances of Roots and The Magic Flute, both of which were stunning. This year they provide the Scottish Premiere of their new production, ‘Please Right Back’.
Using only four performers, Suzanne Andrade and Paul Barritt (with many others) provide another notable entertainment synchronising music, animation, and live action into touching storytelling. In this case the narrative addresses the traumatic departure of the children’s (Kim and Davey’s) dad (Mr E) departs the family for what at first is a fantasy reason, but then later the sobering reality is revealed.
To make up for his absence, Mr E and the children exchange letters. Imagination runs riot in a highly creative account of an adventure. All of this is represented by song, dance, and absurd, subversive animations, as his stories become a kind of game between him and his children.
Most enjoyable and very emotional although, maybe, I was expecting a more hard-hitting social commentary; I think that may reflect my pique at the current state of the world. Recommended.
Until the 11th. https://www.eif.co.uk/events/please-right-back
