In the former Bar Roma building on Queensferry Street there is a new bar/restaurant taking shape. And we can all be sure it will be a success as it is yet another outlet opened by Nico Simeone of Six by Nico – and his second in Edinburgh.

The Six by Nico restaurant on Queensferry Street is still a bit of a building site, but the cocktail bar next door is simply stunning.

At present the cocktail menu takes patrons on a journey down the Yellow Brick Road with Dorothy and her chums. And there is a very tasteful, innovative menu which accompanies the six cocktails (non-alcoholic and alcoholic) in the Land of Oz six course cocktail experience.

A six course tasting menu can often be just a bit too much food, but this menu, concentrating on the cocktails with light bites on the side, was a perfect way to spend a relaxing Saturday afternoon. The price is £65 per person.

The apparatus required to bring this menu to life has to be seen to be believed – with number 5 – the Wicked Witch of the West appearing to involve a scientific experiment with a bunsen burner. This was absolutely our favourite – and introduced a whole new ingredient, Leek Ash, which was the main flavour in the Confit Garlic and Parsley Risotto. (What a find!) And this typifies the innovation which Simeone’s chefs use to create a new food menu every six weeks in the Six by Nico restaurants – and now in the Somewhere by Nico bars in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Somewhere By Nico Edinburgh will take customers down the Yellow Brick Road from 10 June 2024 as part of an immersive theatrical experience with its inaugural menu theme inspired by the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz. Guests arriving at the Queensferry Road location in Edinburgh’s West End will be able to enjoy alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails inspired by characters from the film including the Cowardly Lion, Scarecrow, Tin Man, and the Wicked Witch of the West.

Named Land of Oz, it is the first in a series of immersive and theatrical cocktail experiences offering limited edition cocktails. The new cocktails on offer include Yellow Brick Road – El Jimador Reposado Tequila, Yellow Bell Pepper Cordial, London Essence Peach & Jasmine Soda; Cowardly Lion – Woodford Reserve Bourbon, Project 173 Black Cherry Rum, Red Vermouth di Torino and Deadly Poppy – Axia Mastiha Spirit, Red Berries Cordial, Ginder, Poppy Seeds.
