Samantha Fish and Jesse Dayton Live at Barrowlands

Samantha Fish left the crowd wanting more after her barnstorming performance at Edinburgh’s Usher Hall in 2022. Almost exactly a year to the day, she returns with Jesse Dayton in support of their collaborative long-player Death Wish Blues. The stage chemistry between the pair was obvious as they blasted into a cover of MC5’s Kick Out The Jams.

The funky groove of Deathwish finds Fish strutting all over the stage in theatrical gold flared trousers and a gleaming leather bike jacket. Dayton is a more laid-back figure whose presence gradually comes to the fore, it’s clear he’s an excellent foil for his co-star and those less familiar with his work are fans by the end of the night.

The rock n’ roll blonde bombshell’s voice excels during a cover of the 1963 Barbara Lewis hit Hello Stranger. The Dayton and Fish pairing shines particularly during an acoustic interlude that includes Townes van Zant’s I’ll Be Here In The Morning and Dayton’s own Baby’s Long Gone.

They trade solos and wow the Barrowlands leaving them slack-jawed at the guitar theatrics on display while delivering some soulful interpretations from a variety of genres, Fish’s arresting voice is a good fit for a version of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins I Put A Spell On You while 7 and 7 Is originally by Love is a set highlight.
