Try these Decanter medal-winning Italian wines from Edinburgh-based importer, Independent Wine
There are few better ways to finish your day than with a glass of Italian wine, especially a truly high-quality wine and perhaps even one that’s recently won a prestigious medal. Enter Independent Wine an Edinburgh-based company specialising in premium wines from Italy.
Wine lovers will already know that just a week or so ago, Decanter Magazine announced the best wines of 2020. A panel of experts chose the very best bottles from over 16,500 wineries across the globe. A long list of 20 wines from Independent Wine’s portfolio were awarded Decanter Gold, Silver or Bronze medals.
The company prides itself on being a premium Italian wine specialist. While it operates from an office in the Dean Village, the shop itself is fully online.
Elvira Dmitrieva, CEO, says: “We are proud to work with some of the best family-owned wineries in Italy. The Decanter Award is possibly the most important recognition in the UK. We are thrilled that one of our wines was voted ‘Best in Show’, and another was named ‘Decanter Wine of the Year 2020’.”
That ‘Best in Show’ wine is Maturum Lagrein, a cool climate red wine from the German-speaking Alto Adige region in northern Italy. A relative of Pinot Noir and Syrah, this red grape is not common in the UK. It’s a bit of a hidden gem, and the Maturum version tastes like violets, dried roses and dark chocolate. Elvira suggests you try serving it lightly chilled.
Meanwhile, Decanter’s ‘2020 Wine of the Year’ is Siddùra Nùali’s lush Muscat dessert wine from Sardinia. Made using the passito method, extracting juice from dried grapes, this wine has concentrated flavours of mango, pineapple, honey and caramel. Elvira says it is ‘the perfect accompaniment to a winter cheese board’.
These two stand-out wines and the other 18 medal-winners are not expensive buys.
Elvira explained: “Our shop is online only, which allows us to sell high-end wines at a more affordable price”. Plus there’s some good news for impatient shoppers. Elvira says: “We deliver wines next day to customers in the Central Belt and in England. But our customers in Edinburgh can enjoy same day delivery, if they place their order by 12noon.”
She continued: “Our portfolio covers a wide range of tastes and preferences – from classic oak-aged reds like Barolo and Amarone to the refreshing and tropical whites of Alto Adige. The important thing is, they are all excellent wines, and 20 of them have now successfully passed the most rigorous evaluation by Decanter”.
